At Spirit of the North the Grade 5 classes just completed their fur trade projects. Now the process of creating these forts is not just throwing a few things together. It took a lot of planning and hard work. I learned about Aboriginal life and how Europeans lived during the fur trade. Forts had high walls to protect the people living their. All fort projects included a river, an Aboriginal camp and a food supply such as a garden and animals like moose, deer, fish, bear and buffalo. Within the walls of the fort there would have been the trading post, living quarters and the blacksmith’s shop. Did you know the fur trade began in 1500’s and ended in the 1800’s?  Did you know that when Europeans discovered Canada they were actually looking for the water route to Asia?
